The Emirates Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) has hold lectures to educate the general public, particularly investors in the securities industry, about financial market indices. Dr. Hassan Yaseen, SCA Advisor for Studies, delivered the lectures which were held in Abu Dhabi and Dubai under the auspices of Minister of Economy and SCA Board Chairman, H.E. Sultan bin Saeed Al-Mansoori.
The lectures which was part of the SCA's efforts to boost investment awareness among the general public, targeted securities market investors, staff of brokerage firms and other persons interested in the securities industry.
Dr. Hassan highlighted during the lectures a number of important points, including types of record figures and gave the definition of financial market index, which he defined as a statistical yardstick for measuring the performance of a particular basket of securities which represents the performance of the market or one of the market's sectors. He said the most important factor in the gauging of indices is the trading prices of listed companies on the market which have been indicated in the indices. "This is in addition to the size of the company in terms of the number of its subscribed shares," he added.
Other important points highlighted by the lecturer include ways of calculating indices like the Dow Jones, NASDAQ, Nikkei, DAX, etc, as well as the indices of the SCA and local markets.
The lectures include question and answer session during which Dr. Hassan took and answered questions from the attendees.
