About the Year of Reading

Reading opens minds; promotes tolerance, openness, and communication; and builds a civilized nation that rejects radicalism and closedness. Digital and smart libraries

Digital an d smart libraries provided by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development

In light of the scientific and technological advancements that the world sees today, especially in telecommunications, and the extensive use of the Internet, which enhanced the methods used for disseminating knowledge and information, the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development launched the Emirates Digital Library as part of its efforts to keep pace with the best international standards and to establish the country as a hub of culture and knowledge. This library acts as a national interactive e-platform that sets the foundation for a knowledge infrastructure that encourages content creation and publication across the country.

The Smart Library was launched to serve as a national institutional framework to promote a culture of reading among ministries and federal government bodies through the creation of an infrastructure for knowledge and innovation. This library was created as part of the efforts that followed the directives from President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to declare 2016 as the Year of Reading and came in response to the 100 Retreat initiative introduced by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to discuss key initiatives that aim to establish reading as a permanent habit in the Emirati society.
